The UK police can stop a car anywhere and for any reason. Not stopping when asked to do so is a criminal offence. Usually, the first thing the officer does is to ask you for your documents. They need proof of ownership, insurance and a current driver’s licence. Should you not be carrying those documents you have 7 days to present them at your local Police Station.

All vehicles on the road in the UK that are more than 3 years old need an MOT to be legal. Many people simply take their car for an MOT and risk it failing. This is a bit short sighted, since with a few simple checks you can significantly increase your chances of your car passing the first time. A second MOT will normally cost you money as well as time, so it is worth trying to get your car through the the first test.

The number of people driving without the proper insurance has increased dramatically. When asked a fifth of drivers admitted that they had driven without insurance at least once. The majority did so in their own car. The previous year’s figures showed that only 15% of drivers had driven without insurance, so the level was up by 5%. Men and young drivers are the main offenders.
