Why don’t auto manufacturers make lesser expensive green cars?

I’m talking about all manufacturers (WW). Did no one get the lesson on the Ford Model T and the Ford Mustang? The cars were designed for the masses (poor-huddled) and life got better for everyone. Is it just greed? What is your opinion?

It is easy. Imagine that in 10 years 50% of the car consumes 50% less. That is 25% less fuel compsuption. This could be the aerning of a big oil company.

    We live under a conpiracy.

in Europe or Asia you can buy cars that are much smaller than the ones sold here, but that’s because gasoline costs much more there than in the US. Until very recently, there was not a great demand for small cars in the US because gas was so cheap. Also, large SUVs and trucks are profitable for the car companies but small, inexpensive cars have a very slim profit margin.
The recent increase in gas prices caught the automakers by surprise and a lot will depend on whether the prices stay high or go back to where they were.
In the US market, cars must meet a lot of government regulations for emissions, rollover protection, crash protection, etc. that are more strict than in other parts of the world. so once a car company decides to bring out a smaller car in the US market it takes a while for them to complete all the required engineering and testing.
